I'm a multi faceted artist from Baltimore; photographer, videographer, graphic designer, producer/rapper and much more. When it comes to rap, my music can be a wide range from deeply introspective to braggadocio. My production sampling tends to pull from video game and anime soundtrack composers such as Yoko Kanno and Yoko Shimomura; This provides an interesting blend of Hip-Hop, Japanese aesthetics and modern electronic trends, additionally carried by the stories I convey.” May 4th dawned his “Personal Nothin” EP, constructed of sample from the phenomenal rpg “Persona 5.″ Featuring Hip Hop, R&B, Alternative & Jazz influences. Animation Notes: The Human Head part 1: preliminaries

Hi friends! Remember Animation Notes? Sure been a while. Well, let’s see if we can bring that fucker back, since I would like to level up my art and that means, more studies.

To begin with, I want to look into the question of drawing the human head - one of the few body parts I can be absolutely certain every single reader has! So let’s get started...

Here’s a still from Avatar: The Last Airbender, a Korean-animated show that in a sense functioned as a ‘sakuga awakening’ for me. In this shot, three villains have disguised themselves as members of a heroic faction called the Kyoshi Warriors who wear face paint and elaborate uniforms. Despite this, we can immediately tell all three characters apart from the familiar Kyoshi Warriors such as Suki, because the face models are just very subtly different.

This is the power level we need to be able to reach!

Human heads, and especially faces are really important. And as such, they’re really finicky. A minute difference in placement of a line can totally change the whole feeling of head. A particular illustrator’s way of drawing heads can act as a stylistic hallmark. For example, if I show you this picture...

I bet you could tell me at once that it’s by Moebius. Moebius was a very versatile artist who could draw a lot of different kinds of heads, but there are certain hallmarks here - the style of hatching with lines fading into dots, the fairly rounded circular shapes, and the shadow under the cheekbone. But mind you, here’s a crop of one of Moebius’s best-known pictures:

Here, he omits almost all shading on the face - just a little hatching under the chin - and avoids most lines altogether. Only the face contour and hints of line around the eyes, and the asymmetries in the eyes, lips and nose, tell you about the structure of the face. Despite this, the face feels unmistakably 3D.

At other times, particularly in his Western comics as ‘Gir’, Moebius would go for a really hyperdetailed style that’s just overloaded with hatching, as for example here on the cover of The Airtight Garage:

Here an enormous amount of detail in the face structure is shown: you can clearly see the major planes of the face, the wrinkles around the jaw, the shapes of the chin and nose and eyes. So you get the sense that this character is a sort of colonial masculine ideal like you might see in an old movie, a Lawrence of Arabia type of deal - an older authoritative man, who spends a lot of time outdoors. His expression feels thoughtful, perhaps a tad amused, but in a reserved way. All that from shapes and lines!

Moebius’s style might be considered a ‘realistic’ style, in that the proportions and anatomy closely correspond to what you might expect in photographic projection of a real person’s face, and he saves most of his stylisation for the rendering. (He wouldn’t always draw in this style, sometimes adopting a more schematic ligne claire style, but this is the one he’s most known for.)

In animation, it is rare to see this level of commitment to anatomical realism. But definitely not unheard of! The 90s anime ‘realist’ movement, documented in great detail by Matteo Watzky, had similar commitments. Per Watzky, a lot of the driving force behind what would become the ‘movie style’ in 90s anime, was prolific animation director Kazuchika Kise, who while working on the Patlabor films persuaded character designer Akemi Tokada to adopt a more realistic, less cute style compared to the original TV series - a perfect fit which became the standard in Oshii’s later films, particularly Ghost in the Shell.

Satoshi Kon is the other director who springs to mind on this front; I don’t have such clear info on the process for defining the look of Satoshi Kon’s films, but he was known for his meticulously detailed storyboards, and as early as Magnetic Rose you can see him working with the absolute best realist animators - notably distinct from the realism of Otomo, in terms of how subtly it handles its human characters. While Kon was not the primary character designer for all of his films - instead credits list Hisashi Eguchi (Perfect Blue), Masashi Ando (Paranoia Agent, Paprika), Kenichi Konishi (Tokyo Godfathers) - he is credited as a character designer on all of them and no doubt had a big influence on the style.

So ‘realism’ is one strand, and one of the most demanding. But this is not a post to talk about realism. If you want to learn to draw realistic heads there are many resources out there, and you’ll need to study photos as well. We’ll still talk about schemes for analysing the structure of a realistic head in a bit, since they’ll be relevant for the more abstract approaches.

But of course, the vast majority of the time, we’re actually abstracting away a lot of this anatomical precision for artistic effect. The prevailing style in American TV animation these days is to draw a head that’s basically two overlapping oval-like shapes, sort of like this:

The connection to face anatomy may seem very distant at this point, and yet we certainly see this as a face, and the simplicity allows the animators to push expressions a lot more - and don’t get me wrong, drawing a simple but precise shape consistently is not a simple feat either. On the other hand, it is such an abstract 2D shape that it is rare to see such characters standing in anything other than a 3/4 view long shot facing the camera, which is a limit on shot composition.

We’ll cover a lot more examples soon, but let’s first of all cover some preliminaries!

The structure of a head

To draw anything from imagination, you have to have some kind of handle to simplify it. One of the most enduring approaches for drawing human heads is the ‘Loomis head’, defined by the widely influential American illustrator Andrew Loomis who wrote a series of widely referenced books on drawing up to his death in 1959.

In his books, Loomis mentions selling commissioned portraits to families, and drawing for advertising. Back in the first half of the 20th century, colour photography did not exist, nor tools like photoshop, so adverts were almost always painted by illustrators like Loomis. I’m sure you know the type. Here’s one that Loomis painted which I got off the Internet Archive:

Loomis-sensei painted thousands of illustrations across his life, all in what can be described as a relatively ‘photorealistic’ style - although bear in mind that any ‘realist’ drawing still very much involves abstraction and simplification. Given the prevailing social forces in his time, Loomis’s illustrations almost all depict a lot of quite similar smartly dressed white people, in a variety of settings; that’s what he’ll teach you to draw. But that doesn’t mean his insights aren’t useful!

So, the ‘Loomis head’. This is a particular schematic approach to breaking down the head into a few simple 3D forms, which Loomis recommends as the starting point of any head drawing - he advises you on how you can vary the shape of the head by squashing it around, but that the relative proportions tend to be pretty similar. Here’s how he introduces it in Drawing the Head and Hands (1956):

You start with a sphere with the sides cut off, and make sure to mark the centre lines and brow line; the point where they cross indicates the direction of your head in 3D space. So let’s do some studies.

Actually drawing a circle freehand is the most fiddly part lol. I noticed that in Loomis’s pictures, the flattened side almost always touches the outer contour of the sphere at a tangent. Anyway, here’s my go:

From this cross, you drop down a vertical line, about twice as far as the distance from the brow line to the forehead. The centre of this line is the bottom of the nose. To the bottom of this line, you draw a line in three sections connecting to the bottom of the flattened side of the sphere. These sections are the chin, the bottom edge of the jaw, and the vertical part of the jaw connecting to the ear.

Next, you draw the cheek contour, which is a boundary between two planes. This connects to the brow line, but notably there’s a bit of a kink in it, which I believe indicates the cheekbone:

You can then place your features to get your classic 50s advert guy. Though I drew it pretty rough, I tried to follow Loomis’s choices of what lines to draw and how to stylise, with this ref in particular:

...though in my version the downwards tilt to the head and the slightly pouty lips make him feel like more like some kind of yaoi boy lol.

The cheek contour - more on that shortly - is made quite hollow, the more to emphasise the cheekbone itself. Inside the form of the face, Loomis seems to usually place a line indicating the transition from the front plane to the side plane of the head, again indicating the cheekbone.

The great advantage of this method is that by breaking down the head into simple 3D forms, you can easily place it at any angle (modulo your skill at perspective drawing!) within the picture. The features that Loomis emphasises are mostly, he writes, features of the skull; he offers a method for drawing skulls as well:

I tried to follow it with somewhat less aesthetic results:

no doubt with practice i’d more reliably get the proportions right, but that would get us sidetracked.

From this basic construction, Loomis elaborates considerably, asking us to look at the planes of the face with increasing detail, resembling the Asaro head:

and offering advice on how faces might be varied from the basic template, on applying perspective etc. I will definitely come back and do more Loomis studies down the line, but we’ll leave it at that for now.

One other thing of note: after introducing men’s heads as the default, Loomis gives sections on womens’ and childrens’ heads. Gender divides are definitely emphasised in his work. In contrast to his male heads, Loomis advises you to eschew some of the planar structure he describes for men’s heads:

Nowadays the main reason to look at the Loomis head is not because you want to make a 1950s-style commercial illustration. Certainly, it’s useful for ‘realism’. But for our purposes, it’s also because a variant of this construction has ended up as the basis for a lot of standard designs used in anime.

In contrast to Loomis’s original method, Proko doesn’t have that small cheekbone kink in the line representing the plane change from the front to side plane of the face, nor the emphasis on the cross at the centre of the head as the starting point of the drawing. So don’t assume when someone says a ‘Loomis head’ they’re exactly going to use the method outlined above.

Other ways of breaking down the head

Loomis may have one of the simplest and most straightforward methods, but I would be remiss not to mention other important breakdowns.

The ‘Asaro head’ is a small plastic statue made in the 70s by John Asaro, widely used by painters as a way to break down the planes of the head for light and shadow. Here’s a render of a 3D scan of it:

With the Asaro head, we can really clearly see how the front planes of the face form a kind of inverted triangle, narrowing towards the chin, while the back of the jaw is of course much wider. While it’s useful to be aware of these plane changes, they’re mostly relevant at a later stage of the drawing, when we’re dealing with value - although we may choose to mark the plane changes with a line.

Then there’s the Reilly method, which is broadly less popular than the Loomis method, breaking down the head not into blocky 3D forms but a series of arcs and proportional measurements designed to find relationships between features of the face. This is named for another early-20th-century American illustrator and art teacher, Frank J. Reilly, who lived from 1906 to 1967. Here’s a video that breaks it down step by step:

Honestly, I’ve never tried using this method, it looks too cumbersome to be very useful most of the time. But I do feel like it might be useful to apply it at least a few times, to try to get an intuition for the information it gives about planes and structures.

The jaw/cheek contour

All well and good for painters, but let’s assume you are in a flat- [kagenashi] or cel-shaded style; then what does give your drawing structure?

I’ve increasingly been inclined to see the contour of the face as being one of the most important parts of the drawing: the lumps and bumps there carry a lot of information. And this is also the path we’ll be taking towards more stylised heads.

Let’s start with realism, though. I took a photo of myself at a 3/4 view and traced the major plane changes and structures:

That’s one uncanny looking picture, but let’s now take a look at the green line on its own:

I marked two important points. The first one is the indentation of the eye socket. Depending on angle and size of the eye, this may be less sharp.

The second is the chin bump. We can think of the chin and ‘muzzle’ of the mouth are smaller forms which poke out of the overall simple ‘Loomis head’ wedge shaped structure.

In the case of plumper cheeks, we can imagine a kind of ‘cheek bump’ as well, which has the effect of making a character look younger.

If we view the head at a more oblique angle, closer to a profile view, the bumps become more pronounced: the lips start to cross that contour line and the cheekbone becomes more evident. This time I’ve tried to indicate major plane changes with cross-contour hatching rather than lines, imitating Moebius a little.

Note that even though the lips don’t outright cross the contour line, the ‘muzzle’ does create a break in that contour line there.

Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that. The size and shape of the main features are also incredibly important, as is the approach taken to light and shadow. But when we start breaking down particular artists, particularly in anime, this concept of a contour line will be valuable I think - I certainly think about it a lot when drawing.

25 books recs from my 2020 reads

I’ve been wanting to make this post for a while, but I wanted to wait and see how my last reads of the year would go. Also, narrowing them down to 20 was a nope, so I just made a bigger list instead lol. I’ve tried to include a vague description of each book and the main trigger warnings and rep. I apologise in advance if I forgot anything (for trigger warnings, I suggest double checking on the site booktriggerwarnings).

Adult SFF

A Memory Called Empire: it feels like I’ve raved about this one enough but just in case: A Memory Called Empire is a space opera following an ambassador who suddenly finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery and a political conspiracy. It’s got brilliant world building and a nuanced and intricate reflection about culture, language and colonialism. Subtle slow burn f/f romance on the side (+ a poly relationship shown in flashbacks). TW: suicide.

Black Sun: first book in an epic fantasy series inspired by pre-columbian Americas. Great cast of characters and very interesting use of mythology + the main plot is focused on political and religious conflict and the author handles both sides of it quite well. The book has bisexual and non-binary rep, one of the main characters is blind. TW: suicide, abuse, self harm. There’s some gore, although it’s not extremely graphic.

The Sword of Kaigen: a Japanese inspired stand alone epic fantasy. The book is not focused on battle or war, although they play an important role in the plot itself, but on family dynamics and personal growth. It’s a very character driven novel, with some rather conventional elements (elemental magic) and some more original reuses of traditional fantasy tropes. TW: abuse.

Empire of Sand: first book in a duology of companion novels inspired by Mughal India. Mostly focused on religious and political conflict, although romance is heavily featured in both books. Pretty good slow burn romance in both cases. TW: abuse, slavery, torture, sexual assault, self-harm.

The Light Brigade: a rather unconventional space opera with a complex non linear narration. This is not an easy read in every possible way, but the pay off is worth it. Also it’s one of those cases in which I think it’s best to go in knowing nothing or almost nothing. TW: torture, murder, ptsd, war, gore, infectious diseases (yeah you need a strong stomach for this........).

Gods of Jade and Shadow: a coming of age story set in Mexico during the Jazz age. A bit of a lighter read, a journey-adventure featuring a god slowly becoming human, tasks to complete etc. TW: bullying.

River of Stars: more of an alternate history than pure fantasy, as most of GGK’s novels are. This one in particular was inspired by Chinese history and it’s ideally a companion to Under Heaven. Both can be read as standalones but I find their parallels and differences very interesting. I’d also recommend The Lions of Al-Rassan and A Brightness Long Ago, by the same author. All of them revisit historical events from the point of view of rather ordinary people who find themselves in the middle of events they can’t control. 

Empire of Gold: the last book in a trilogy, starting with City of Brass. The first novel is more trope-y and naive in places, but I found both the second book and the conclusion of the trilogy more nuanced and satisfying. There’s a m/m relationship on the side. TW: mass murder, torture, enslavement, abuse.

Adult SFF novella edition

The Deep: novella set in an underwater society built by the descendants of African slave women that were tossed overboard. The novella deals with trauma, both personal and generational one.

This Is How You Lose The Time War: epistolary set during a time-travel war. Enemies to lovers f/f romance. Very character driven, don’t expect a lot of world building.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune: an Asian-inspired novella that gives a voice to people usually silenced by history. It follows a cleric as they chronicle the story of the late empress, retold through objects that she used in her life. 

YA SFF

Return of the Thief/The Queen’s Thief series in general: the last book in the queen’s thief series! Honestly just read this series it’s literally too good? It is carefully planned from start to finish and it has politics, adventures, characters with extremely questionable morals and good banter? TW: loss of a limb, torture (not extremely graphic), ptsd.

The Kingdom of Back: probably Marie Lu’s best book yet? think of the concept of “shakespeare’s sister” as explained by Woolf in A Room of One’s Own, but with the Mozart siblings. I actually had no idea Mozart had a sister prior to reading this. It’s a quite emotional read, as it shows how little opportunities women had to be recognised for their talent.

Adult Literary Fiction

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous: a beautiful exploration of language, family history, trauma, sexuality and gender. TW: war, ptsd, death.

Augustus: an epistolary historical fiction novel narrating some of the main events of Augustus’ reign through letters from/by his closest friends and enemies. Not even remotely historically accurate, but a lot of fun to read if you’re familiar with historical accounts of that period.

A Gentleman in Moscow: following Count Alexander Rostov, who, in 1922, is sentenced to a lifetime of house arrest in the Metropol, a luxurious hotel in the center of Moscow. A peculiar novel, funny and heartbreaking at once, following a vibrant cast of characters as they come and go from Rostov’s secluded life.

How Much of These Hills Is Gold: following two recently orphaned children through the gold rush era, the book is an adventurous historical fiction piece that focuses on themes like gender, identity and immigration. TW: abuse, sexual assault, racism.

The Memory Police: published in Japan in the mid 90s, but translated recently, it’s an orwellian dystopian novel set on an unnamed Island where memories of certain objects and feelings slowly disappear.

The Nickel Boys: the book follows the lives of two boys sentenced to a reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. A bleak, but important book, with a shocking final twist. TW: abuse, racism, death.

Manga/Graphic Novels

The Girl from the Other Side

Opus: very meta, much like most of Satoshi Kon’s movies. Kon actually never finished this (the magazine he was publishing it on was cancelled) and a last chapter was published after his death after his family found the sketches for it.

Oriental Piano: based on the story of the author’s grandfather, who invented a musical instrument in Beirut in the 1960s, combining Arabic music and a western musical instrument. Sort of reminiscent of Satrapi’s style.

33. Nou, daar gaat de studie

Blijkbaar ben ik in een sad mood, want ik luister naar It’s a sad song, mijn sad musical playlist. (Nu speelt Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’s He’s My Boy op en ik kan niet wachten om dit live te zien in Amsterdam. Mits het doorgaat. Corona cancelt alles. Daar komen we later wel op.)

Ik heb maar weer eens de wekker gezet en dat was ook nodig. Ik lag redelijk op tijd in bed, maar toen besloot ik om heel veel dingen over de etnografische en demografische geschiedenis van Avatar door te nemen. Ja. Take that in. In mijn vrije tijd denk ik aan de demografische opdeling van een fictionele wereld. Maar dit komt allemaal door Kirima, die met Avatar Kyoshi reisde. Haar etniciteit is water, maar haar nationaliteit is Aarderijk, want ze immigreerde als jong kind. Ik wist dat Kyoshi een gemengde etniciteit heeft, namelijk aarde/lucht, maar in de tijd van Aang is dat zowat onmogelijk. Daar is pure segregatie en etniciteit en nationaliteit komen overeen, terwijl er weer in de tijd van Korra een vijfde nationaliteit bij is gekomen.

Mensen die niets van Avatar weten, hebben nu echt geen idee wat er aan de hand is, maar dit houdt me dus bezig midden in de nacht. Je vraagt je misschien af waarom ik zoveel gedetailleerde achtergrondinformatie over deze serie weet, maar dat komt omdat ik mijn bachelorscriptie over deze serie gaat. Of ging. Ik zie wel hoe dat af gaat lopen.

(Ik ben nog steeds pissig over de slechte kostuums in de Nederlandse versie van Kinky Boots. Anyway, Not My Father’s Son is zeer dramatisch.)

Oké, ik werd dus wakker door mijn wekker en heel snel kreeg ik groot nieuws: de Faculty of Arts gaat dicht. Yup. Als een opfrisser: ik heb lessen op twee verschillende faculteiten, namelijk Social Sciences (MC, B&T, Sociologie) en Arts (GLINT). Wegens het Corona virus heeft Arts besloten om de universiteit helemaal dicht te gooien t/m de 13e. 

Caroline zei al dat de faculteiten vandaag gingen overleggen wat het plan van aanpak zou worden. Ik had vorige week al een mail gekregen van Social Sciences met het nieuws dat een crisis team wordt opgesteld. 

Eén ding dat ik ook al heb aangestipt is dat de universiteit van Ljubljana een zeer gedecentraliseerde universiteit is. Alle faculteiten zijn totaal los van elkaar en ze werken soms samen onder de naam “University of Ljubljana” en zo presenteren ze zichzelf ook, maar elke faculteit heeft eigen regels enz. 

Als een resultaat krijg je dus dat er in tijd van crisis, zoals het nu wordt gezien, er overal verschillende aanpakken worden gehandhaafd. Dit vind ik eigenlijk best slecht. De decentralisatie t.o.v. studiemateriaal etc. is te begrijpen, maar op dit soort vlakken zou ik wel denken dat je een universeel plan zou hebben.

Tuurlijk, de universiteit heeft richtlijnen opgesteld, maar alle faculteiten mogen die zelf inkleuren. Als een resultaat zijn sommige faculteiten open en anderen gesloten. Niet alleen dat, maar de “sluitingstijden” verschillen ook. Mijn faculteit, Arts, is dus dicht t/m de 13e, maar die van Caroline, Social Work, is dicht t/m de 23e. Dan is Animal Crossing al uit! Dan is het officieel lente!

(Six’s All You Wanna Do is zo verraderlijk. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt dit juist een mega vrolijk en leuk lied. De Ariana Grande/Britney Spears geïnspireerde pop-sound is ook een groot contrast met de vele dramatische ballads op deze playlist. Het begint ook heel goed en als een soort van feest, maar het wordt steeds slechter... en slechter... en slechter... en slechter... en uiteindelijk heeft K. Howard een mental breakdown. De studio versie is tenminste nog oké om naar te luisteren, want het is gedeeltelijk gecensureerd en ze hebben al het gehuil en geschreeuw eruit gehaald.)

Zover ik weet zijn andere faculteiten ook nog open. Ik weet niet hoe het bij faculteiten zoals Medical en Law zit, want daar ken ik niemand. Ik weet niet eens hoeveel faculteiten er zijn.

Een kleine Google search later en wow, 26 faculteiten! Mom, holy fuck!

Wel zijn studentenfeesten en evenementen allemaal geannuleerd. Ook het sportcentrum is dicht.

Er zijn maar 16 besmettingen in Slovenië, dus Sanne en ik vroegen ons wel af waarom de universiteit zulke grote stappen maakt. Er zijn 2 miljoen mensen in dit dunbevolkte land en 16 besmettingen. Vergelijk het met het dikbevolkte Nederland met 17 miljoen mensen en 320 (of zoiets) besmettingen en alle universiteiten lopen nog goed.

Ja, oké, ik weet dat scholen in Brabant gesloten zijn, maar dat is echt maar een klein deel.

Maar ja, zijn wij Nederlanders gewoon te nuchter? Er is een Radboud student met het virus en alles is nog steeds “up and running”. Of is er toch iets ergers gebeurd in Ljubljana? Who knows. Not me.

De Faculty of Arts schreef in de mail dat het is als een preventieve maatregel en oké, dat kan ik wel inzien. Ze willen niet dat die 16 ook richting de 320 gaat. Maar dan alsnog: de universiteit stilleggen wegens “maar” 16 mensen?

(Terug naar de ballads. Choosing Not To Know van In Transit is heartbreaking, sowieso op het moment dat de acapella muziek stil valt en als moeder begint te zeiken over de Bijbel.)

Dit is het gekke aan Corona, in mijn ogen. Het dodental en het gevaar is niet eens zo erg. Hiermee bedoel ik niet dat de doden niet belangrijk zijn bla bla bla en dat de besmetting niet erg is la la la, maar dat is niet het grootste probleem. Nee, dit virus legt de hele wereld stil op zowel economisch, toeristisch, cultureel, financieel, medisch en educatief vlak.

De wereldeconomie ligt stil en de toeristische sector werkt niet. Beurzen, feesten, filmpremières enz. gaan niet door. De beurzen gaan naar beneden. Tandartsen en doktoren kunnen hun werk niet meer doen. Scholen en universiteiten gaan dicht.

Damn.

(Ik waardeerde Lea Michele (ja, Rachel in glee) eerst niet in Whispering, het nummer van Spring Awakening. Misschien is het omdat ik Katie Boeck het beste vond in de rol, maar ik ben bijgedraaid.)

Ugh. Genoeg Corona praat. Dat zei ik gisteren ook al, maar deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen hebben wel te maken met mijn verblijf in Slovenië. Ik had natuurlijk niet gedacht dat mijn Erasmus er zo uit zou gaan zien.

Het plan van vandaag was simpel: First Residence Permit ophalen met Sanne. Aangezien Sanne eerst college had, gingen we pas rond 12:00. Op de bus zaten we dus veel te praten over de university shutdown en andere dingen en op een bepaald moment vroeg een oud vrouwtje welke taal we sproken. Ze dacht namelijk dat het Zweeds was.

Wij legden uit dat het Nederlands was, maar hey, is Zweeds niet deel van dezelfde taalgroep? Toen vroeg ze wat we deden in Slovenië en of we al een beetje Sloveens konden. Nou, we komen voorlopig niet veel verder dan “dober dan”. “prosim” and “hvala”, maar het is iets.

Om 12:30 kwamen we binnen en we hadden nummer 20093 en 20094 en op dat moment waren ze bij 20079, dus hoera, minder dan 20 mensen. En wow, het ging best snel in het begin. Binnen een half uur of zo waren we al bij 20089.

Natuurlijk hadden we te vroeg gejuicht. Alweer was een deel van de balies dicht en nu was er een omgekeerde situatie. Vorige keer waren 2 van de 3 balies voor afhaal, terwijl wij aanvraag waren. Nu waren 2 van de 3 balies voor aanvraag, terwijl wij afhaal waren. Nou. Shit.

(Mijn grote enthousiasme voor Dear Evan Hansen is minder geworden, maar So Big/So Small is zo goed. De hele OBC is goed.)

De wij wachtten. Wij waren ook gewoon aan het praten, maar een man die voor ons dat zei dat we stil moesten zijn. Well, fuck you too, sir. Het irriteerde ons, want ze zaten in een gewone openbare ruimte. Wij waren niet eens de enigen die praatten. Er was zelfs een schreeuwerig kind aanwezig. Meerdere keren gaf hij ons nog steeds nare blikken, maar ik had zoiets van: “uhm mate, kick that tiny child in the shins first?”

Wij proberen tenminste nog een gezellige situatie ervan te maken. Wij kunnen er niets aan doen dat hij een ongezellige zak is die de hele tijd op zijn telefoon zat terwijl hij met zijn rug toe naast zijn vrouw zat. Ze hebben vast een leuke middag gehad.

Op een moment gingen ze ergens anders naar toe en, welp, ik vind het leuk om te geloven dat wij hem weg hebben gejaagd.

Dus we moesten wachten. Het was ook raar, want er gingen soms ook mensen voor ons, zonder dat ze een nummer hadden. Gingen die gewoon naar binnen? Nee, want er was ook een bewaker die mensen wegstuurde, dus die mensen die toch eerder naar binnen zijn gegaan, hadden dus een reden.

(Costume Party is zo interessant. Er is een hint van hulpeloosheid. Come From Away is een 9/11 verhaal dat niet focust op New York!)

Dus ja. Uiteindelijk duurde het toch nog 1 uur en 40 minuten voordat Sanne aan de beurt was. Ik zat op mijn telefoon en ik wachtte. Toen bedacht ik me: wat nou als ik weer mega snel aan de beurt ben?

Ja. Bleek dat een balie al een minuut op me aan het wachten was. Sanne zei later dat ze de timer op 47 seconden zag en dat ze zich afvroeg waar ik was. Nou, ik rende meteen naar binnen en 10 minuten later was ik klaar!

Er was wel even gezeik, want Matjaz stond niet in het systeem.

Oké, hij stond wel in het systeem, maar zijn handschrift is zo slecht, dat de vrouwen achter de balie het niet konden lezen. De vrouw achter mijn balie was aan het praten met die naast haar. Gelukkig kon de vrouw aan de andere kant het horen. Zij had net Sanne gehad, dus zij wist wie ze bedoelden. Dus het contract ging ook van persoon naar persoon en ze lachten en op een moment zei de vrouw van mijn balie ook dat het een catastrofe was.

Alles is nu wel geregeld en Sanne en ik gingen toen een burek eten bij NOBEL BUREK. En ja, dat is het voor nu.

Heh. Zowat een uur nadat ik dit had opgeslagen in mijn drafts kreeg ik te horen dat 2 van mijn vakken niet door gaan deze week. 

Ach. 

(We zitten nog steeds in de sad playlist. Nu speelt Grease’s There Are Worst Things I Could Do. Ik wilde altijd dat Santana en Blaine dit nummer in glee deden. Santana deed dit nummer, maar ze moest het delen met Ms. July en Unique 😕.)

Ik had het erover met Kath. Kath heeft nog steeds geen informatie, dus ze gaat maar morgen naar de uni. Kath en ik waren beide aan het koken en het is wel een contrast. Kath is helemaal bezig met kruiden en groenten en wat dan ook en ik kook simpele basic bitch pasta. 

Maar deze keuken is gewoon shit. Het is mega klein. Kijk, waarschijnlijk zou ik nooit van koken gaan houden, maar in Nijmegen nam ik het goede voornemen om meerdere basic bitch gerechten te proberen en dat ging best wel goed.

De enige reden dat ik een lente uit herkende vanwege de game Stardew Valley.

Hier ben je gewoon niet gemotiveerd om veel ingrediënten te kopen, want de koelkast is mega klein. Ik ben ook niet echt geïnteresseerd in veel te koken, want het vriesvakje is mega klein, dus ik kan niets voorbereiden of bewaren. Ook heb je maar 2 elektrische platen en maar weinig pannen, dus zelfs al had ik de geweldige ingrediënten, dan had ik geen plaats.

Oh, terug naar het uni verhaal.

Blijkbaar is de universiteit niet het enige dat gedecentraliseerd te werk gaat. De faculteit dus ook? Alle lessen met meer dan 100 leerlingen zijn zeker afgeschaft, maar de kleinere vakken kunnen het dus zelf bepalen. MC en Sociologie hebben al doorgegeven dat ze niet door gaan. MC gaat niet door t/m de 20e (Animal Crossing day babey!) en Sociologie heb ik pas weer in april, maar dat was al gepland. Ik heb Sociologie namelijk maar één week per maand ofzo, maar ja, nu slaan we maart dus over.

Zover ik weet heb ik nog maar één vak, namelijk B&T, maar het kan ook zijn dat we morgen pas te horen krijgen hoe dat gaat. Aan de andere kant, de dude van B&T is die “chill” professor, dus wie weet?

En oké, ik geef toe dat ik heel erg opkeek tegen deze week. Alsnog, meeste vakken zijn om de week/paar weken, dus de vakken zijn slecht verspreid. Ik heb of een mega rustige week, of een mega drukke week. En ja, dit zou een drukke week moeten zijn.

Maar toch ben ik ook wel een beetje teleurgesteld? Ik ben grotendeels teleurgesteld vanwege GLINT en MC. Ik weet dat voordat ik vertrok, iemand ook zei: “Wow, je gaat nu echt doen wat je leuk vindt!” en... ja...

Sociologie viel toch nog grotendeels tegen en al dat gedoe, dus ik ga niet zeggen dat ik het erbarmelijk vind dat dat vak niet doorgaat, maar het is wel een beetje een meh gevoel. Plus, wat moet ik nu gaan doen? 

Vorige week had ik dus bijna de hele week vrij en die week ging mega snel voorbij en ik had constant het gevoel dat ik iets wilde doen, maar ik wist niet wat. Alhoewel, Caroline zei dat studenten deze week gratis naar musea kunnen, dus misschien is de timing toch wel goed.

De lessen zijn niet weg ofzo. Het meeste wordt nu gedaan via zelfstudie en mail, of via e-learning classrooms, of via weblectures, maar ik baal van GLINT, want de atmosfeer van de mensen bij GLINT is gewoon mega gay cool en bij MC is het handig om de media samen te bekijken.

En jullie hebben mijn geklaag over de literatuur van Sociologie meegekregen. Ik had een beetje gehoopt dat het zou helpen om alles van de lerares te horen. Ik kan natuurlijk mailen, maar nu moet ik alsnog proberen om alles zelf uit te vogelen.

Hmm. Dit is gewoon niet hoe ik Erasmus had voorgesteld. Obviously, niemand had dit voorgesteld. Niemand zag het aankomen dat 2020 stil zou staan wegens dit vage virus, maar l’chaim. Natuurlijk ging ik ook niet naar Slovenië puur voor de studie, maar zoals ik net al zei, het was wel een deel ervan.

Okay, admittedly, Fire Nation troops showing up in the middle of the night was plenty of reason to flee, but couldn't Kon have at least given her a heads up? That, at the very least, would have been nice, yeah?

Cassie let out a sigh. Okay, okay, that was maybe expecting a bit too much. If Kon had woken Cassie, Cassie would have woken Donna, and Donna would have woken the rest of the Kyoshi Warriors in their village, and...

"What the Fire Nation did last night constitutes an act of war!" Donna roared at the island council. "We need to take the fight to them, before they decide we're easy picking and start raiding our island in force!"

And, if Kon had woken her, Cassie realized, they would already be at war instead of being locked in debate over it.

31. Ugh, deel 2

“I’m back, you sorry bastards!”

Ik luister weer eens naar Glee guilty pleasures (geen zin in music recs vandaag) en ik heb zeer waterige Cup-A-Soup. Voordat ik mijn geweldig chronologische verhaal ga beginnen, kijk naar dit:

Ik heb een kaart van mijn oom Ton en tante Marjo gekregen! Dat had ik niet verwacht en ik vond het heel lief! Ik was van plan om een magneet te kopen zodat ik mijn Dito! kaart op de verwarming kon hangen, maar nu wil ik deze ook ophangen.

Oké, terug naar gisteren (5 maart). Ik, uh, werd wakker om 13:00. Ja. Dat was niet gepland, maar het was deels mijn schuld, want in de avond was ik tot 3 uur ‘s nachts wakker vanwege Check, Please! I needed to appreciate Jack Zimmermann.

Dus ja, ik werd mega laat wakker en om eerlijk te zijn, raad ik dat niet aan. Een groot deel van de dag voorbij. 

Er was nieuws: de eerste corona patiënt in Slovenië is in Ljubljana. Ik heb niets op NOS gelezen, terwijl de NOS normaal ook bijhoudt welke landen last hebben van besmettingen, maar Barbara was weer panisch. Twee nachten op een rij heeft ze luidruchtig en gestrest gebeld. Heel Italië is natuurlijk besmet.

Eén geval klinkt als niets, maar we hadden het wel weer even over hamsteren. Net zoals in Nederland en België zijn alle hand gel en desinfecterende spullen uitverkocht. In Nederland zijn we ook binnen een week van 1 naar 100 gegaan en in België ook. Ik las net dat de Carnavalsoptocht in Sittard definitief is afgelast. Ik geef niet echt om Carnaval - dat heb ik nooit gedaan - en optochten heb ik altijd irritant gevonden (ik denk dat het komt door die ene keer dat een kar een harde zak snoep tegen mijn kop heeft gegooid), maar ik weet hoeveel werk en tijd mensen in deze optochten stoppen, dus ik vind het wel erg. 

Ik kan alleen echt niet geloven dat Vindicat nog steeds op ski trip is gegaan. Ach. Hopelijk komen ze veilig terug.

Maar dat was het nieuws. 

Had ik plannen? Nee, maar rond 15:00 ben ik met Caroline naar BTC gegaan. Caroline heeft maar één stopcontact in haar kamer, dus ze wilde een verlengsnoer. Ik was al een tijd opzoek naar een stand voor mijn Switch en online zag ik dat ze op voorraad waren bij Big Bang BTC. Er is geen grote tech winkel in het centrum. Big Bang is te vergelijken met Media Markt en de dichtstbijzijnde was dus in BTC. Hoera, weer 50 minuten met de bus en nu stonden we ook nog in de file wegens drukte. Je kunt echt van alles vinden in BTC, maar het is een shitty verbinding met de bus. Eerst moet je van ons huis naar de stad en dat is maar 10/15 minuten, maar daar heb je een kwartier overstaptijd en daarna een half uur met bus 27 naar BTC. Gelukkig is de overstap op de terugreis maar 1 minuut.

Ik vond uiteindelijk mijn Nintendo stand en ik kwam duurder uit dan gepland (de stand van €15 die ik wil is echt nergens te vinden in Slovenië. Ik heb zelfs de Sloveense variant van Marktplaats bezocht) en het is zo klein dat de stand in de verpakking in mijn jaszak past.

Toch ben ik er wel blij mee. Deze stand is overduidelijk steviger dan de slappe backstand van het Switch systeem en de grootste reden dat ik een stand wilde, is dat je nu je Switch kan opladen tijdens het spelen in tabletop modus.

Kleine pauze, want ik heb mijn dece-waterige Cup-A-Soup geknoeid 🙃🙃🙃. En alle pasta zit vast op de bodem van mijn thermosfles en ik krijg het er niet uit 🙃🙃🙃. Soep in thermoskan is dus geen goed idee 🙃🙃🙃.

Zie je hoe klein de stand eigenlijk is? Damn. Maar ja, het is wel een goed ding en ik snap gewoon niet wie bij Nintendo niet na heeft gedacht over het opladen bij tabletop modus. De plaatsing van de kabel is logisch en bruikbaar bij handheld en TV modusen (modi? modia?), maar totaal onlogisch en onhandig bij tabletop modus.

Maar ja, BTC. We zijn ook nog bij andere winkels geweest, want anders voelt het echt nutteloos om 50 minuten te reizen voor een paar minuten, en we hebben wat gegeten bij de Spar To Go. Ik weer de kip wrap, maar Caroline has cheesecake met Oreo in een bakje, zonder dat ze wist wat het was. Blijkbaar heet “kwark” in België “platte kaas”.

Soep update: het grote deel van de soep poeder zat ook vast op de bodem. Ik heb mijn thermos een paar keer geslagen en zo heb ik de meeste pasta en soep poeder eruit gekregen. Nu is de soep een stuk beter.

Maar je kan bij de Spar dus ook een hele maaltijd krijgen. Het is een beetje te vergelijken met de IKEA. De mensen naast ons zaten aan de friet met schnitzel.

Bij de Spar heb ik natuurlijk ook even boodschappen gedaan, want ik wil Lulu’s recept voor pasta met spinazie en crème wel proberen. Toen we thuis kwamen, realiseerde ik me dat ik de bladspinazie was vergeten, dus ik heb maar weer gebakken rijst met diepvriesgroenten in sojasaus gemaakt. 

Ik vind het oprecht lekker, dus ik klaag niet.

Verder heb ik weer aan de uni gewerkt en literatuur gelezen. Gotta love it, al moet ik zeggen dat de literatuur van GLINT en MC zo veel beter te begrijpen is, want die teksten zijn niet geschreven door mannen die zichzelf geweldig intelligent vinden.

Oh, wacht, nee. GLINT’s literatuur is geschreven door Michel Foucault. Ik neem dat terug.

Om mijn verloren ochtenduren in te halen, ben ik dus door gegaan t/m 22:00 en dat is shit. Normaal is na 20:00 de studietijd voor mij voorbij, zodat ik in de avond leuke dingen kon doen. Nog een reden om niet tot 13:00 in bed te blijven! Nog een reden om niet tot 3:00 Jack Zimmermann te waarderen! 

Self-control! I did it! Ik wilde eigenlijk zo snel mogelijk mijn Switch stand uitproberen, maar nope, verantwoordelijkheden zijn er ook nog. Alsnog, de vakantieperiode komt ten einde.

Ik heb ook nog de nieuwste Showmance geluisterd en de gast was een mega glee fan, dus er was een interessante Q&A. Veel nice tibits. Volgende week is Wheels!!!

Vandaag besloot ik dus de wekker te zetten om 9:00 om tenminste niet mijn dag te verspillen. Ik lag alsnog tot 10:00 in bed want ik was moe, want alweer gingen mijn oogjes pas rond 3:00 toe. Deze keer was het niet mijn schuld, maar mijn hersenen besloten ineens om de hele chronologische Avatar cyclus vanaf Avatar Wan t/m Avatar Korra door te nemen. Ik had bijna een boek over Avatar Kyoshi om 2 uur ‘s nachts gekocht, maar a) Animal Crossing b) ik heb al €10 meer uitgegeven aan die stand, c) ik wil voorlopig alleen het Check, Please! boek kopen en d) het was 2 uur ‘s nachts.

Caroline was vroeg opgestaan om haar Residence Permit te halen. Ik kreeg toevallig gisteren een mail, helemaal in het Sloveens, met het nieuws dat mijn documenten klaar zijn om op te halen. Wow, toch snel. Ik hoorde wel dat er een totaal nieuwe regering een intreden heeft gemaakt op woensdag, dus de “constitutionele crisis” is over. Ik zat te twijfelen of ik het vandaag moest halen, maar Caroline appte dat het mega rustig was, dus rond 11:00 nam ik de bus naar administration.

Ik was voorbereid. Ik heb een musical en Starkid Homecoming op mijn telefoon gezet. Ik had mijn Switch ingepakt. Ik kon eindelijk mijn nieuwe paraplu gebruiken!

Ik kwam aan bij de administratie en toen realiseerde ik dat ik het belangrijkste vergeten was: mijn papieren en mijn bewijs van afhaal.

Fuck.

Het had totaal geen zin om verder te gaan en het had ook geen zin om op en neer te gaan. De administratie gaat op vrijdag al om 14:00 dicht en het zou ong. 50 minuten reistijd zijn. Dan zou ik pas rond half 1 terug zijn bij administratie en ik verwachtte een wachttijd van minstens 2 uur. Ja, het zou sneller zijn om af te halen en dat merkte ik ook toen ik me ging registreren, maar het kon toch lang duren.

Dus dat zou mogelijk later van 14:00 zijn. En als het dicht is, is het dicht. Daarom gaan mensen ook relatief vroeg. Overal hangen ook waarschuwingen: rond sluitingstijd helpen ze niemand meer, ook al hebben mensen uren gewacht.

Nou. Shit. Maar ik had geen zin om meteen terug te gaan. Ik heb door de klote regen moeten lopen voor dit! Kath zei dat er een leuk cafeetje dicht bij de administratie lag, genaamd Čin Čin, dus daar ben ik naar toe gegaan. Ik bestelde Earl Grey thee met citroen en een chocolade croissant. De hele sfeer in het café was best fijn. Een beetje “alternative”, maar ik kon de bass in de muziek niet waarderen.

Er was ook een loft. Daar kon je alleen komen via een strakke dunne ladder, dus de drankjes en afval werden vervoert via een makeshift lift. De bediening trekt aan touwen om het te besturen. Ik heb een uurtje gezeten en uhm, de thee...

Ten eerste, de kop was ijzer. Oh my fucking God als er één ding is dat ik haat bij eten enz. dan is het ijzer. Zelfs nu dat ik erop terug kijk, ril ik. Ten tweede, de citroen was dus een shotglaasje pure citroensap. Ik was even bang dat ze me een glas limoencello hadden gegeven, maar ze zouden me geen sterke drank voor 30 ct. geven. Ik had gewoon een schijfje citroen verwacht. Ten derde, ik was fucking dom en ik yeete zowat dat hele shotglas in mijn thee.

Bah, het was zo fucking zuur, maar ik heb het toch maar opgedronken, want dit was mijn eigen idioterie 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Eenmaal thuis heb ik weer literatuur gelezen en heb ik ANNE+ gekeken, want het nieuwe seizoen is begonnen! Doris verdiende beter! Dit is niet de DORIS+ die ik verwachtte! Ach, het was een goede serie en ik kijk uit naar de rest. Met NPO Start Plus kun je al het hele seizoen bekijken, maar ik ben geen binger, dus ik wacht wel. Ugh, ik kan niet wachten tot Sara terug komt.

En ja, dat is het voor nu.
